A particular feature of the new Bordeaux tram network is its ground-level power supply system which is used in the city centre to avoid overhead wires for esthetic reasons.

  • Urban tramway (first generation): (horse-drawn): 4 May 1880 - ?; (electric): 17 Sept. 1893 - 8 Dec. 1958.
  • Urban tramway (second generation): 21 dec. 2003 - today.

GAUGE

  • Tramways (first generation): 1435 mm. (Some suburban tramways had 1000 mm. at first, but these were changed to 1435 mm. later).
  • Tramways (second generation): 1435 mm.
